Histrionic Personality Disorder (4)

Irrational Wrong Beliefs that Cause Pain:

•We need to be loved and approved by everyone in our lives;

•We must always be perfect and above criticism (if that were so, then we would be above Jesus who was the most worthwhile person who ever lived!);

•“I can’t help the way I feel . . .” Wrong, we have choices. We can internalize negative feelings and let them grow inside of us, or we can turn them over to the Lord and let Him take away the pain (Psalm 55:22, 68:19; Isaiah 46:4);

•“Because I’m a Christian, God won’t let negative things happen to me.” Lots of negative things happened to Jesus;

•“My feelings are always a true sign of God’s love, presence and guidance.” The truth is that these things are not dependent on how we feel, but have been promised to us in God’s Word, i.e., “I will never leave you or forsake you,” (Heb. 13:5). He will give us direction in our lives if only we follow Him (Jer. 29:11-14); and

•“God can’t use me unless I’m spiritually strong.” God has chosen, in His infinite wisdom and unconditional love, to use imperfect people. All of us are imperfect people; many are redeemed, but only Jesus is perfect. God desires to use all people, “being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus,” (Phil. 1:6).

What can you do to help?

Keep the histrionic individual oriented to reality. Help them to understand that they do not lose their value if they are not always the center of attention.

Encourage them to think about how their behavior impacts others, because they often tend to be insensitive.

Encourage responsible behavior
